Music and the Gilmore Girls

LANE: [on phone] No, wait, wait, wait, progressive rock is a really passé style now but I listed it as an influence because it was a progenitor of great things that came afterwards. I mean, I contend that you can draw a straight line from Yes to Jethro Tull to the Jam to Nirvana, bing bang boom. . . Who are the Jam? [to Rory and Lorelai] That’s disturbing. [walks away]

Introduction

In addition to an amazing amount of books and authors mentioned on the show, "Gilmore Girls" is also very savvy when it comes to music. They don't reference anemic indie rock to try to gain credibility with tween audiences and they give each of their episodes ridiculously long and pretentious song titles as names. What they do is pay tribute to music both famous and underground and most of the music worship on the show comes from Rory's best friend, Lane Kim, who is a true audiophile and a drummer for a band called Hep Alien. The show mixes soundtrack music, constant references, covers by Hep Alien and even some guest appearances by real bands (including the Shins, Sonic Youth and Sparks) to create an oasis for any music lover. This page chronicles this show's love affair with music.
