I think Mr. Elliott is living in the past. Neither the Democratic party
or New Labour can be described as parties of the left. Concepts of left
vs. right no longer make sense when analyzing the behavior of these
kinds of parties. For example, Gordon Brown is not a social democrat and
New Labour is no longer reformist. It represents the financial
aristocracy. So Brown is not being "dumb" -- he's not going to attack
the interests he represents.
