Well, Paul C, since you identify alternative hypothetical possibilities, I'll

note that there is a third hypothetically-possible situation: the real

reason for someone's firing could be political but the person could have

engaged in inappropriate conduct anyway, including theft of state

funds. The case of Ward Churchill comes to mind: a jury found the other

day that he was wrongfully terminated and that the reason cited

(plagiarism) was a pretext for getting rid of him for his political activism

and statements (especially re 9/11). But, if someone is an outspoken

opponent of government policy, shouldn't one at least have enough

political sense not to give those who want to get rid of you for political

reasons enough ammunition to be able to get rid of you for cause?
