Dear Rakesh,
I have tried to collect information about Bunny ( Bernice) that might be
useful to you. She was born in Newburyport, Massachusetts in 1920. After
receiving her Phd she married and taught at Brooklyn College. The marriage
did not last long and she never remarried. She also taught at University of
Massachusetts and Bard College. She had two other jobs that we can remember:
the Government of Puerto Rico and the Gillette Company. After that we can't
remember any other paid job. She was also involved in theatrical productions
as an avocation.
She would speak of working on articles but I never saw them. Bunny died
March 17, 1977. She was working on a book review of" Marx's Daughters" for a
Marxist journal but had not finished it.
One other piece of information came to light. I looked up Raya
Dunayevskaya on the internet and noted that she had been Trotsky's
Russian-language secretary in Mexico in 1937 but broke with him in
1939 at the time of the Hitler-Stalin pact. One of Bunny's friends
was Jean Van Heijenoort who was also a secretary of Trotsky in
Mexico. Maybe that was a connection. We met Jean twice over the
years. He came to a untimely death over twenty years ago. I was told
by a close friend of his that there is a biography: by Anita
Fefferman. I have not looked for it. I just remembered something
else. After Jean visited us there was a news article about Trotsky's
papers being opened at Harvard. My son Paul who is a photojournalist
arranged through Jean to be there and take
photos.
I hope this is helpful. It is wonderful to know that Bunny's work is
rememberd. I had a close relationship with her but never understood anything
about her work since my background is not in economics. Rohna
