Lord Meghnad Desai http://econ.lse.ac.uk/staff/mdesai/ When was he appointed 'Lord'? Presumably he wasn't appointed Lord while Thatcher was the P.M. given his biting critique of monetarism (_Testing Monetarism_, London, Francis Pinter Ltd., 1981). Are there any other Marxist 'Lords' now? Who was the first Marxist -- while s/he still considered her/himself Marxist -- to be appointed Lord? Have there been any Marxist knights or Marxists with other titles bestowed by royalty? Am I the only one who finds this to be a rather odd title for a Marxist? Did Desai ever publish anything explaining why he was accepting this title? btw, according to amazon.com a book by Desai entitled _Marx's Revenge: The Resurgence of Capitalism and the Death of Statist Socialism_ [Verso, ISBN:1859846440] is due to be published this month. The Verso site makes no mention of this book, though. Does anyone have any more knowledge about this? In solidarity, Jerry
