Of all the writings of the late Ernest Mandel, this is probably the one that listmembers have not read. Excerpts from _Delightful Murder: A Social History of the Crime Story_ (Minneapolis, University of Minnesota Press, 1984) are at: http://www.cwrl.utexas.edu/~women/mysteries/siesing/mandel.html Interesting commentary above on the role of crime in capitalist societies and how criminals have been viewed at different times as being either villains or heroes. I can't say that I am particularly a fan of the "crime story" genre. However, those who are might also be interested in the following interview with Alan Wald titled "The Urban Landscape of Marxist Noir": http://www.crimetime.co.uk/features/marxistnoir.html (dated November 17, 2002!). In solidarity, Jerry
