At the risk of stating the obvious, a conservative political alliance of the Christian Democratic Union and the Christian Social Union, along with the Free Democratic Party, narrowly lost in the recent (2002) elections and remains a strong opposition force. Going back a few years, the Christian Democrats (and Chancellor Kohl) were in power for 16 years, ending in 1998 (and almost begun again in 2002). To state another obvious example, the Catholic Church -- which remains an important political force in Bavaria and some other parts of the country. Solidarity, Jerry
