Joint Appeal From the Associations of Academicians in Turkey Against a US-GB Assault on Iraq February 6, 2003 1. We, the educators and scientists in Turkey, strongly oppose the war into which our country is being dragged, and which will lead to a destruction of human life and economic stability in our region. We call on academicians, scientists and university boards throughout the world to support our appeal. 2. We condemn the participation of our country in this assault, especially in view of the historic fact that our country was born of a war of liberation, fought against imperialism. 3. We believe that the current problems faced by our country will be overcome not through marketing the lives and the blood of our children, but through creative and productive efforts. 4. We do not want foreign military boots on our soil, which has experienced a war of liberation from imperialism. We stand against collaboration with aggressors, and we refuse to be incriminated before future generations. 5. We do not accept to send our children into deserts to take part in a war in which civilians and children of a neighboring country will perish. 6. We do not want people to be killed, parents to shed tears or children to become orphans, in our country or in any other corner of the world. 7. As we ask university boards everywhere to respond to this humanitarian plea denouncing war, we condemn the UN weapons inspectors' attempts to force Iraqi scientists to take a stand against their own country. 8. We declare that we do not accept the use of our soil and our military bases by a single foreign soldier in an assault against our neighbors. 9. We invite concerned people around the world to join us in opposing this war.
