I think I may have had Alan B. Carter's book Marx: A Radical Critique
at the back of mind when I wrote the last part of my post. I haven't
read that book in seven years, but I do remember enjoying it.

Actually in his review of Empire John quotes Moulier  on the
"Copernican inversion" represented by autonomous Marxism. John
however is critical of the one sidedness of automous Marxism.
