(OPE-L) a news story about Iraq that is being suppressed

"60 Minutes II", a weekly news program on CBS, had an
episode last night on the torture of Iraqi prisoners by
US soldiers at the Aba Ghraib prison. What made the
story particularly compelling were the photographs shot
by US soldiers. In these photos naked prisoners were
tortured,humiliated, and demeaned. Story at:

Some of the photos can be seen if you follow the 'multimedia --
video' link.

What makes this story particularly revealing is:

a) a decision by CBS _not_ to air the photos and story for 2 weeks
at the request of The Pentagon.

b) The astonishing lack of coverage of this story in other
media. Most notably, the fact that the photos have yet (as
far as I can determine -- which included an Internet search)
been published in the Arab world. For instance, the photos haven't
appeared on the aljazeera web site. Nor has the story
been covered yet by the online versions of The Independent or
The Guardian. So much for the "independent" press!

In solidarity, Jerry
