VICTORY IN VENEZUELA VICTORY IN VENEZUELA!
Chávez’s popular support is reaffirmed in the August 15 referendum

The New York Times called him “a pugnacious leftist populist” but had to
admit he had “already survived four national strikes and a brief coup” and
had “won handily after 8.5 million of Venezuela's 14 million registered
voters swarmed polling stations.”

In fact Chávez’s Bolivarian Revolution has now been endorsed by the
Venezuelan people not just in this latest referendum but in two elections,
the referendum on the new constitution and the mass uprising that
overturned the coup in April 2002.

Ocean Press will shortly publish a new book containing an extended,
exclusive interview with Hugo Chávez conducted in February this year by
Aleida Guevara, the daughter of Che Guevara. In what became an
extraordinary encounter over several days, Chávez explained his fiercely
nationalist vision for Venezuela and a commitment to a united Latin
America. He also discussed the significance of the military coup against
his government in April 2002, Venezuela’s new democratic constitution and
reviewed his country ’s relations with the United States and Cuba. He also
outlined the extensive program of social reforms benefiting Venezuela’s
poorest and most
marginalized sectors, including the indigenous communities, undertaken by
his government in recent years.

Included as an appendix in the book will be an exclusive interview with
General Carneiro, head of the Venezuelan armed forces who played a key
role in encouraging the popular

resistance that thwarted the coup.

“Yes, Chávez may go, but Chávez is not only Chávez. The situation we are
in has awakened very radical tendencies, feelings. This movement of
change, of restructuring, of revolution, will not be stopped. This process
has assumed its own strength.” — Hugo Chávez
