If my memory of the discussions in the early 70s' is right the argument was similar to that in Marxism and Linguistics. Ideas do not have to be part of the superstructure by virtue of being information. The procedure for calculating logarithms for example, was a part of the means of production in the 18th and 19th century. Without doubt scientific practice may take place in the course of e.g. the struggle for production, say experimenting with variations of intercropping, but the science of it?
