A week before Halloween, it should be noted that in the same city where there is Highgate Cemetery (the inspiration for Bram Stoker's 'Dracula' and, coincidentally, where Karl Marx is buried: see post "Karl Marx and Vampires" dated 10/13) there will be a paper presented in a workshop on _Capital_ by an Italian scholar on -- "A GHOST TURNING INTO A VAMPIRE: THE CONCEPT OF CAPITAL AND LIVING LABOUR" Will this paper transform the "Historical Materialism" conference? Will the "Friends of Highgate Cemetery" and the Gothic underworld of London turn out for this event? Can the time for the workshop (currently scheduled for 1-2:45 on a Saturday afternoon) be re- scheduled for a time after night fall to accommodate some of those who might wish to make their presence known at this event? In solidarity, Jerry PS: Marx referred (metaphorically, of course) to constant capital as "dead labor." Yet, if we are to take the vampire metaphor literally, he should have referred to it as UNDEAD labor. Another case of mixed metaphors, I guess.
