Dear Friends:

I just want to briefly comment on the last message by Jurriaan Bendien before I leave the list temporarily.

Jurriaan on 07/05/2007: "Not just in Scandinavia but also in the Benelux, Britain, Germany, Australasia etc. the welfare state is historically strongly associated with social democracy, although also associated with the christian democrats."

Welfare Sociology has produced very good works measuring and classifying the different types of Welfare States. The result of these works is strong evidence in favour of the Scandinavian countries ( Denmark , Finland , Norway , Sweden and maybe Island ) as considered legitimately social-democrat. The kind of Welfare State created in Anglo-Saxons countries on the one hand and Central and more recently Mediterranean Europe on the other has liberal-conservative roots.

I recommend reading Gösta Esping-Andersen's book: Social Foundations of Postindustrial Economies. Oxford University Press, (Translated to Spanish, Italian and Japanese).
