The Marxist archives conveniently provide online a collection of correspondence between Marx and others on the writing of the book (they were also published by New Park once, in a book). From this you can see how Marx was very interested in all kinds of data which Engels and others sought to provide. http://www.marxists.org/archive/marx/letters/subject/capital.htm Some of that found its way into the pages of 'Capital', which are of course studded with examples from the Blue Books etc. Some Marxists might snigger at my "horribly empiricist" suggestion that Marx did anything so ordinary as researching, and abstracting from, verifiable facts, rather than simply performing the "holy miracle of abstraction" from his blessed forehead, but the evidence is, that Marx looked at a lot of facts. Indeed when he died, his papers included several cubic metres of Russian statistical material. Jurriaan
