(...) And what of the Bush administration's idea of spreading democracy, I ask. Is that now discredited? "You can't discredit something that was wrong from the start," he replies with evident feeling. "Their [the neocons'] ultimate conclusion is that if all the world were filled with democracies, there would be no war. But that is contrary to the entire human spirit." "I'm not sure history has ended. Russia has passed through democracy and come out the other side. You could make the same case about the European institutions, which don't seem to be accountable to anybody except their foreign ministries." http://www.ft.com/cms/s/0/7a2140c6-7b7c-11dc-8c53-0000779fd2ac.html

John Bolton, a working class hero (he is the son of a Baltimore firefighter at Yale Heights, and was the first person in his family to go to college, with scholarships to Yale, studying with preeminent conservative thinkers Robert Bork and Ralph Winter) has a fresh book out called "Surrender is not an option: defending America at the United Nations" (Threshold Editions, 2007). There's a whole spat of books being published now with after-the-fact wisdoms on the Bush administration.

Jurriaan

There's room at the top they are telling you still,
But first you must learn how to smile as you kill
If you want to be like the folks on the hill
A working class hero is something to be
If you want to be a hero, well just follow me.

- John Lennon, "Working class hero"
