I also had a brief meeting with Andrew, but one that leads me to share
my sense of him as a warm, engaging, serious scholar. Andrew and his
partner, Wendy Carlin, attended an URPE conference some time in the
mid-1980s. They needed a place to stay for a few days in New York after
the conference, and we (my then partner and I) invited them to stay with
us in Brooklyn. I remember happy rambles through Prospect Park, and
good discussions on many issues. Also finding that talking with Andrew
made me resolve to shed my theoreticist ways and work more
systematically with data. (Like many New Year resolutions, this one
went largely unfulfilled, but that is hardly Andrew's fault.) Andrew's
was an important voice in left economics, and his death is both a
personal and professional loss.
