Well, of course, you - as well as all others on the list - are free
to not discuss a subject with someone if you think it's going nowhere. It often happens in discussions that participants realize that one, both, or all parties are being repetitive and/or that insurmountable conceptual, methodological, or other differences exist.  There's nothing wrong with a decision to "agree to disagree", after all.  Having said that, I don't think there is anything inherently "totalitarian" with the perspective on historical materialism that Dave Z has put forward.
