In its KILM data set, the ILO provides interesting data on the world's working population by economic status. See for example Table 1 in the wages report: http://www.ilo.org/wcmsp5/groups/public/---dgreports/---dcomm/documents/publication/wcms_100786.pdf As regards market expansion, quantitatively the single most significant trend is the very large absolute and relative growth within one decade of both wage and salary earners, as well as own-account workers, in Asia.

While the Western government bureaucracies and Western parasitic capitalism ruthlessly punish enterpreneurship and private initiative, while richly rewarding asset speculation - causing the number of own-account workers to shrink - in Asia the number of own-account workers is actually increasing quite strongly.
