Michael I think three outstanding books are:

1. History of Economic Thought: A Critical Perspective by E. K. Hunt
M.E. Sharpe; 2nd Revised edition edition (September 2002) is quite
valuable.
2. The foundations of capitalist economy by Jacques Gouverneur it is
free at http://www.i6doc.com/, searching by last name.
It is a Marxian books really didactic.
3. Toward a New Socialism of Cockshott and Cotrell, it is free at Paul
Cockshott site

The article I suggest is "What Keeps Capitalism Going?"
by Michael A. Lebowitz
Monthly Review Volume 56, Number 2,

All the best
Alejandro
