I had not come accross the Mahalanobis distance, I can see though that it might be very useful in a number of image processing applications. I will check out the link on his planning methods, Thanks for the lead.

You probably came across the Mahalanobis distance in your work.
Apparently the same Mahalanobis was also involved in India's five-year
plans. I have not studied what methods were used but Wikipedia gives an
introduction:
