I hope you are correct, Jerry. It is possible that the Monroe doctrine will
be changed, in the sense that it is realized that the old "gunboat
diplomacies" no longer work. The military-strategic consideration is simply
that for the purpose of causing economic/political damage or exerting
political pressure, an invasion or bombing raid would nowadays not even be
necessary, just a blockade and economic boycott would already have a very
large impact. More generally, I am just thinking about what the effects are
for popular-revolutionary processes of the increased dependence of countries
on the world market, in the context where MNC's control a much larger
proportion of world trade than they did in previous eras. It creates among
other things a problem of finding alternative sources and trading routes.
