The main point of the article seems to be that Marx's theory was an
irrational abberation which intelligent people should see for what it is -
without however actually saying anything about what the theory says or what
it is about. Interesting technique: a theory is wrong not because of its
content, but by association. Time magazine thus projects its own
irrationalism onto Marx and Engels, that is all. The deeper problem of
postmodernist society is its inability to evaluate social theory according
to rational criteria anymore, i.e. there is a regression to the criterion of
whether something is meaningful to you or not, or whether it serves your
purpose. Karl Popper merely anticipated this trend by arguing it is
impossible to understand society as a whole, leaving us stuck in the
conservatism of small adjustments.
