The number of troubled banks on the FDIC confidential list leaped to 305 in
the first quarter of 2009, the highest number since 1994. Some analysts
expect hundreds of banks to collapse over the next year or so. Around 2,900
banks failed during the Savings & Loans crisis from 1980 through 1994.
