[OPE] Cutting down on wasteful government spending is now trendy among the elites

DPJ to ax 2.5 trillion yen from extra budget, eyes more cuts

The government said Tuesday it had culled 2.5169 trillion yen in wasteful
and non-urgent projects from the supplementary budget and was still looking
for ways to fund its campaign pledges.
Because the figure is less than the 3-trillion yen goal set by the
Democratic Party of Japan, Yoshito Sengoku, the state minister in charge of
administrative reform, said he would ask the various ministries to take
another hard look at projects to ax from the supplementary budget passed by
the preceding administration. (...)

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism will cut 887.5
billion yen, the largest amount among all ministries.
One project to be eliminated concerns a plan to widen expressways to four
lanes in six segments around the nation.
The farm ministry will recover all of about 300 billion yen that would have
gone to a fund to promote the integration of farmland.
The Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare had the biggest slice of the
supplementary budget with 3.4 trillion yen.
Officials said 353.4 billion yen of a 700-billion yen program to help people
find jobs--for funding in fiscal 2010 and beyond--will be frozen.
On the other hand, only about 6 percent of the total allocated to the
Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry was considered wasteful..(IHT/Asahi:
