[OPE] intermission

We seem to be in an intermission of sorts. Well, that's OK.

For the time being, I'm just going to sit back and wait for others to
come up with ideas for topics to discuss (although I'll forward
announcements, etc. if I think they are of interest to the list).

I've noticed that the volume on other mailing lists has been
decreasing as well and am wondering whether this is part of
a trend. I.e. is there a trend away from e-mail lists to other
forms of Internet communications - especially social networks?

Participation on social networks (like Facebook and MySpace - not to
mention Twitter) has gone way up, One possible meaning is that
the amount of time which individuals spend online has gone up.
I think it's also likely, though, that there has been a shift in useage
- away e.g. from blogs to social networks. Blogs, I think, were a
'fad' anyway - they are generally too narcissistic. There is also an
authoritarian bias to blogs. Mailing lists, such as our own, and
bulletin boards have the capacity to have more 'horizontal' exchanges
by more people, but they are older models of Internet communication.
