I think this description is misleading. It is not a temporal division of
first producing a surplus and then appropriating it. As a real process
it occurs continuously but conceptually it is possible to distinguish
between the surplus produced and the specific way parts of it are
appropriated through money, during a given period of time. After all
there is a difference between formal appropriation of monetary surplus
value and real appropriation of surplus goods and services.
