Perhaps I should emphasize that I do *not* advocate a theory of the end
of imperialism. I think the bulk of the Left agrees that the US/UK
invasions the past decade indicate a resurgence of imperialism. Rather,
the difference lies in a theory of the meaning, mechanisms and dynamics
of imperialism, where I think the orthodox model from Hobson and Lenin
does not fit well with the trajectory of the global capitalist economy
since 1945 which is easy to say in hindsight. (And this is precisely
what is being discussed in this thread.)
This is an ongoing debate among Left intellectuals everywhere, c.f.
Hardt/Negri, Callinicos, Harvey, Gindin/Panitch, Brenner etc.
