[OPE] FWD: Starving in Europe in 1947

Surely there is a confusion of usevalue and exchange value in what Paul B writes. He is no doubt right about the motive, but the people of Europe could not eat 'profit' they needed food. If there was a real shortage of food across the US and Europe combined, then food consumption in Europe could only risk if consumption in the US fell. He was not appealing for US workers to contribute money, but to eat less.

The ' rest of the world the rest of the time'... wasn't/ isn't occupied by
the US and in need of consolidation to prevent an outbreak of socialism
which would consolidate soviet power. If this could be done by reducing the
level of consumption or workers and lower middle classes in a non starving
(US) state, rather than redirecting US profits through tax, then of course
it will be done. In any case we hear enough of charitable appeals by the
'good and great' for the starving, so I'm not sure why you ask the question

I don't know this (that Truman asked Americans to help starving
Europeans), but what of the rest of the world the rest of the time?
Whatever happened to such an idea?
