Riccardo says that I "attacked" him for saying that Marx didn't have a
consistent view of abstract labor or, more precisely, for saying exactly
the opposite of "Marx held one consistent view, and our job is just to
find out what is was." In the first place, I don't think a disagreement
is identical to an attack. In the second place, I did NOT EVEN DISAGREE
with Riccardo's statement. My remarks, in general, were about assessing
the adequacy of different interpretations. I'm racking my brains here to
figure out where the "attack" occurred, and the only thing I can think of
is that I said that assertions of internal inconsistency in Marx must
be demonstrated, not simply asserted. The remark was not even directed
"to" Riccardo, or to any particular individual's assertion or to any
particular assertion.
