I endorse Allin's comments on this topic, with the following rider.
Alan Freeman's remarks suggest that he favors the use of numerical
examples over the use of mathematical models, as if the two were
essentially distinct practices. But I think that in using numbers
one is making implicit reference to an underlying set of postulates;
the process of modelling simply forces one to make these assumptions
