The server at California State University (CSU) has been somewhat erratic
recently in the sense that it alternates between posting messages promptly
and posting them in batches. In the later instance, it may *appear* that
the server is down since you are not receiving OPE-L messages for some
time even though you may have posted a message some time before. There are
thus periods when you don't receive messages for 12 hours (approximately)
even though the server is on-line and messages have been sent to the server
for distribution.
Here are some suggestions:
(1) If you want to find out if the server is answering requests right
away, send a "RECIPIENTS OPE-L" message to:
<listproc@anthrax.ecst.csuchico.edu>. If you do *not* receive an
answer shortly from listproc, that means that the server is
answering messages in batches and there are delays (or the server
is off-line).
(2) If you send a post and do not receive it back shortly as an OPE-L
post, do *not* send a duplicate message right away. Try waiting a
day.
(3) To be on the safe side, *always* make copies of any posts that you
send. If your Net system doesn't automatically make copies of your
messages, you can "cc" yourself for a copy. Of couurse, when you
see the message posted (look for the OPE-L #), you can delete the
copy.
Apologies for spelling. My Net system at Pratt is down again and this system
will not allow me to edit or spellcheck. Hopefully, the Pratt system will
be back on-line tomorrow.
In OPE-L Solidarity,
Jerry
