(1) I think you are shifting the terms of the debate since you originally
had a claim not only regarding an interpretation of Marx re technical
change but also a micro empirical claim re forms of technical change
in the period of "modern industry."

(2) If one wants to consider why there are changes in the capital/output
ratio in specific branches of production, then one might want to look
at changes in the degree of constant fixed capital utilization. What
might make an interesting research project would be to relate changes
in the degree of constant fixed capital utilization and the
capital/output ratio to changes in the business cycle and/or changes
in the demand for the specific commodities produced.
