9th CONFERENCE OF NORTH AMERICAN AND CUBAN
PHILOSOPHERS AND SOCIAL SCIENTISTS
Havana, Cuba, June 6-20, 1997.
CALL FOR PAPERS; AN INVITATION TO PARTICIPATE
North American philosophers and social scientists as well as social change
activists are invited to participate along with Cuban counterparts in this
annual event in Havana, Cuba. In past years as many as 75 North Americans
have joined with 140 Cubans for a week of discussions, followed by another
week of visits to various organizations and sites of interest. The 9th
conference will take place at the University of Havana from June 9-13.
CALL FOR PAPERS: Commissions are being organized on the following thematic
areas: RENOVATION OF MARXISM; DEMOCRACY AND SOCIAL JUSTICE; POST-MODERNISM
& MARXISM; MARXIST THEORY AND PHILOSOPHY; EPISTEMOLOGY AND METHODOLOGY;
ETHICS AND SOCIETY; EDUCATION AND SOCIETY; CLASS, RACE, GENDER AND
SEXUALITY; IDENTITY AND CULTURE; LITERATURE & POPULAR CULTURE; SCIENCE,
TECHNOLOGY AND ECOLOGY; GLOBAL ECONOMY & GLOBAL CAPITALISM;
NEO-LIBERALISM; MODELS OF SOCIALISM; CONSTRUCTION OF SOCIALISM/ PROBLEMS
OF SOCIALISM; MARKETS & SOCIALISM; COOPERATIVES; SOCIAL POLICY; U.S.
RELATIONS WITH CUBA & LATIN AMERICA; ANALYSIS OF CAPITALISM; POLITICAL
ECONOMIC THEORY; and REVOLUTIONARY THINKERS. We are looking for papers and
Commission organizers in these and other areas. We would also welcome
non-technical surveys of the social sciences and of American society.
Papers should be no more than 8 pages long so as to maximize discussion time
at the conference. Commission proposals and paper abstracts are due January
22, 1997 with completed papers due March 1, 1997. As opportunities for oral
presentation are limited, priority consideration will be given early applicants.
Following the conference in Havana, a select group will carry the conference
to other parts of Cuba. This will enable you to see more of the country:
Matanzas, Holguin, Camaguey, Guantanamo and Santiago.
COST: Approximately $950 for a basic 14 day stay in Havana at University
accomodations, all group activities included from Nassau or Cancun departure
to return. There will be some additional cost for transportation outside of
Havana. Some scholarship assistance may be available for those with limited
means.
DEADLINES: January 22, 1997: abstracts for papers & proposals for
commissions (1-2 pages)
March 1, 1997: completed papers (8 pages max.)
April 1, 1997: completed application.
