One of my students asked me about the following passage on the third page
of the chapter on the "The Role of Credit" in Volume 3: "In stock
companies the function is divorced from capital ownership, hence also
labor is entirely divorced from ownership of means of production and
surplus-labor. This result of the ultimate development of capitalist
production is a necessary transitional phase towards the reconversion of
capital into the property of the producers, although no longer
as the private property of the individual producers, but rather as the
property of associated producers, as outright social property. On the
other hand, the stock company is a transition toward the conversion of all
functions in the reproduction process which still remain linked with
capitalist property, into mere functions of associated producers, into
social functions" (p. 437, Progress edition; she showed me the Penguin
edition and that English seemed better).

Now, is this one of those cases of Engels putting his "stages" approach
onto Marx' Volume 3? Is that book which compares Engels' preparation of
Volume 3 to Marx' actual text in print yet in any language?

Thanks,

Paul
