I think Ajit was right on this one. A Sraffian friend of mine has convinced
me that Sraffa's aim was to show that Marx's value theory --- as Sraffa
interpreted it --- was right, but that he was trying to do so in a way that
mainstream economists could understand.
That makes Sraffa a Marxist economist in my book.
BTW, I also think that folks like Steedman and Ajit are (or, in Steedman's
case, maybe "were"?) Marxist economists. (I'm not trying to drive a wedge
between them and Sraffa.) They are also critics of Marx.
It's dialectical, see?
