**** TOPICS DISCUSSED THIS MONTH ****

A. Threads discussed at *greatest* length (20 or more posts):
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
o LUXURY GOODS AND PROFIT RATE [continued from August; includes
"Luxuries in the New Solution"; "On confusions due to
consumption"; "Marx on Post-Production Catastrophes"; "Sraffa on
Aggregation"] (-32- posts);
o HUMBUG AGGREGATE PRICE-VALUE CORRELATIONS [related to previous
discussions on empirical measurement of value; arose out of "On
confusions due to consumption"; includes "Statistical
conservation of value"] (-24- posts).
B. *Other topics discussed* included:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

o EMPIRICAL WORK [out of "luxury goods and profit rate"; related to
previous discussions on productive and unproductive labour;
includes "unproductive fixed capital"];

o OPPOSITION TO PROPOSED CONTRACT - A NOTIFICATION [see Paul Z's
5439];

o "HIGH HOPES - LOW EXPECTATIONS";

o TONI NEGRI [concerns campaign to free Negri; see 5490 & 5496];

o PROPERTY RIGHTS.

C. *Procedural Discussions*
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
o PROPOSAL ON ARCHIVES: See [5434] for proposal. There was
extensive discussion (34 posts by 18 members) on this proposal.
Discussion is continuing and, hopefully, we can reach a resolution
(for or against; with or without amendments) in October.
D. *Miscellaneous*:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

o JERRY LEVY [discussion and get-well messages following the news
that he experienced a heart attack on 8/28. He lives. Includes
"Jerry Levy Update", "Jerry's 'Holiday'", etc.] (-39- posts);

o HAPPY BIRTHDAY, OPE-L! [see (5435) on 9/5 -- our 2nd birthday];

o "DAS KAPITAL" ON LINE [began with Michio's (5427). Concerns
availability of e-editions of "Das Kapital" in German. Also, see
(5445) and (5452) for further info on e-editions of works by M&E].

OVERALL, September was a *heartening* month. It began with the disturbing
news that Jerry experienced a heart attack. The resulting "get well"
messages caused a dramatic increase in participation -- as well as some
first-time postings from several listmembers. There was also extensive
discussion this month on "Luxury goods and the profit rate", "Humbug
aggregate price-value correlations" and the "Proposal on archives" (see
above). All of this represented a dramatic increase in participation and
volume from August (when a total of 41 posts were written by 11 members).

As we enter October, we still have an outstanding issue -- the "Proposal
on archives" -- which, hopefully, will be resolved (for or against). As
always, listmembers are also encouraged to raise new topics for
discussion.

In solidarity, Jerry
