[OPE-L:6546] IMPORTANT *PLEASE READ*

Beginning mid-June, I do not expect to be near a computer until after
Labor Day (i.e. early September). During that time period I will be
living on my boat ("Bon Copain") in Newport, Rhode Island and cruising
to various ports in New England. Consequently, I will be unable to serve
as list moderator/co-ordinator during that time.

Basically, I think that the list can be set to "autopilot" during the
summer. However, *if there is a volunteer*, a moderator could be added for
the summer only in order to take care of routine list maintenance (e.g.
help set subscribers' mail and add or unsubscribe an address when asked
by a subscriber). We could do this in an formal way by contacting the
Server Manager at CSU or, possibly, arrange to have someone take care of
list business by telneting into my account.

Is there a volunteer?

If the last two summers are any indication, I expect list volume to be
relatively low during the summer months. Possible additions to the list
can be discussed in the usual manner in September.

Regardless of whether we have a volunteer, you can help yourself and the
list moderator by remembering the following commands:

1) If you want to temporarily postpone receiving list mail, you can do
so by sending a message to <listproc@galaxy.csuchico.edu> which reads
(only):

SET OPE-L MAIL POSTPONE

2) If you want to resume receiving OPE-L mail, then send a message to
listproc which reads:

SET OPE-L MAIL ACK

If this doesn't have the desired affect, then you can pick-up the postings
from the WWW archives if you have access to the Web. If your current
address is subscribed, then you will be able to post from that address. If
for some reason, your subscription has been wrongly terminated, then you
can send your postings to another subscriber with the request that s/he
forward them to the list.

3) If you want to find out the e-mail address of other subscribers, send a
message to listproc which reads:

RECIPIENTS OPE-L

[***NB: OPE-L is now, I understand, available in a "digest" version. If
you receive the "digest" , then you receive one -- large! -- message/week
that contains all of the weeks' postings rather than each post
individually. The "digest" is shipped on Saturday mornings. To receive
the "digest" version, send message to listproc which says "SET OPE-L MAIL
DIGEST"***].

I do apologize in advance for any inconvenience that my summer vacation
will cause. I do believe, though, that we are a strong-enough and
well-established-enough list to continue to function actively in my
absence.

In solidarity, Jerry
