Geert and I had a go at 'predicting' the break-up of Yuogslavia on the =
basis of our conceptualisation of the capitalist mixed-economy in:

Williams, Michael and Reuten, Geert (1993)
After the Rectifying Revolution: the contradictions of the mixed =
economy? The Political-Economic Transformations in Central and Eastern =
Europe Capital and Class 49: 77-112

The basic argument in outline was that the 'big-bang' or near 'big-bang' =
transitions forced on Central and Eastern Europe by the West left no =
time for Civil Society institutions needed for a successful =
liberal-democratic capitalist market economy, that had been stunted or =
destroyed under authoritarian State Capitalism, to evolve. Consequently =
there was a tendency, once the authoritarian lid was lifted, for these =
societies to revert to pre-bourgeois or 'robber baron' forms of de facto =
association based an ascriptive characteristics such as ethnicity, =
religion and so on. This is no doubt too crude.

Looking forward (even more crudely) one might speculate that western =
capital is intervening primarily to try and make these societies fit for =
capitalist investment, as well, perhaps as to try to maintain their =
'legitimacy'.

Milosovic is an ideal hate figure for the bourgeoisie: an =
ultra-nationalist so-called communist with facist tendencies blotting =
the picture of the new world order, end of politics, end of history and =
all that Fukyam-esque stuff.
