Jurriaan (and OPE),
Your five theses on socialism are very much in line with the
philosophy motivating the forthcoming special issue of Science
& Society, "Building Socialism Theoretically: Alternatives to
Capitalism and the Invisible Hand," guest edited by Pat Devine.
The Call will be in the Winter 1999-2000 issue. Basically,
we are calling for constructive visions of democratic planning,
intentional markets, non-elemental pricing, principled forms of
incentives, etc. Socialism must be visualized and its actual
structures outlined (without, of course, arbitrary imposition
of detail), in contrast with "market socialism" (which, in its
recent guises, is essentially what we used to call "people's
capitalism").
OPE-ers and others are urged to participate. Contact Pat
D. at pat.devine@man.ac.uk, and me at scsjj@cunyvm.cuny.edu.

    Best to all,
      david
