Tour Details

Basics

This will be the 34th consecutive year for this tour of Europe. It visits twelve cities in nine countries over 35 days, and is unique in that it's a guided, not a lead tour. That means that students choose how to spend all of their time and pursue academic and cultural experiences independently according to their own personal interests. Trip leaders provide orientation, guidance and daily help in achieving trip objectives, but don't usually lead groups around to attractions. Three courses are offered for three undergraduate credits each. Regular summer school tuition for each course is paid separately from the trip costs. Courses may also be taken for course audit (in which case $150 must be paid to audit the course, even for graduated seniors). Everyone going on the trip must either take a course for credit or audit one of the courses. This summer's courses will be CSC 101, Overview of Computer Science which fulfills a divisional credit and THE 255 History of Costume, which also fulfills a divisional credit requirement. A few students take more than one course.

Accomodations
Mostly two-star, a couple of three-star hotels with breakfast usually included. More often than not, we have private bathrooms in each room. On board the ship, we have four-person inner cabins with private showers and facilities in each room.

Costs
The cost of the trip is $5000 per person. This covers round trip air travel, all train and ship travel, a day in the Alps, every hotel and transfers between arrival and departure stations and a few group dinners. In addition, everyone needs money for lunch and dinner, site-seeing, social expenses and various personal expenses. In the past this extra amount has been around $2500 per person, but varies considerably from one student to another. (If the value of the US dollar against the euro and other European currencies drops significantly before the tour leaves, the cost may be increased to match such a change.) Finally, those taking a course for credit need to pay for three or four hours of summer school tuition (the amount varies each year and of course depends on whether the course is a three or four hour course). The $150 audit fee must be paid before departure, by everyone else. The following cost estimates apply to those taking one course for 3 hours of credit (left example) or auditing one course (right example).
A four hours of credit course (like CSC 101) would cost one hour more.

Estimated Costs with One Three Hour Course for Credit Estimated Costs with One Course for Audit
Trip $5000
Trip $5000
Tuition $1740 (summer of 2007) Audit Fee $150
Meal/spending Money $2500 Meal/spending Money $2500
Total $9240 Total $7650

NOTE: Since the trip costs were set in September of 2007, the dollar's value may have changed against the euro. We anticipated some of this but not all of it. Consequently, the total cost of the trip could rise slightly this spring as we get closer to paying bills.

Funding Opportunities
Wake Forest University Scholarship for Study Abroad
Scholarships $1,000 for summer are available to students with a minimum GPA of 3.0. Students may not be graduated at the time of their study abroad and they may not have received a WFU Scholarship previously. Applications may be obtained in the Center for International Studies. Contact the International Studies Office for the deadline for summer study abroad.

Scales International Studies Scholarship
Scholarships are available for all students, including seniors who wish to do post-baccalaureate study. Selection will be based on academic ability, financial need and the originality of the project. The grants may be used for either independent study or an academic program already in existence. Applications may be obtained from the Center for International Studies. Contact the International Studies Office for the deadline for summer study abroad.

Lowell & Anne Tillett Scholarship
These scholarships are available for students wishing to study in Eastern Europe or the former Soviet Union. Awards are based on merit and need. Applications may be obtained from the Center for International Studies. Contact the International Studies Office for the deadline for summer study abroad.

Extras
Some of us can usually deviate on the return from London without a large additional charge.

Many choose side trips to other cities/countries during our trip (for example, Mälmo, Sweden). These excursions are quick, easy and cost very little. They make excellent day-trips and we'll help you do them successfully. There are many out-of-city day trips which we'll help facilitate. Some examples include: Cinque Terre and Pisa in Italy; the coast of Normandy in France; bicycle tours near Amsterdam; Auschwitz near Krakow; Potsdam near Berlin; etc.

We'll give you advice on getting theatre tickets before we get to London and how to buy Opera, Ballet, pop music, and symphony concert tickets along the way.

If you like tennis, we may be in Paris for the French Open and in London for the start of Wimbledon. If so, we will try to help you get affordable tickets.

In case of illness during the EuroTour

Because of the economies of group bookings, tickets and travel, it is very unlikely that any refunds for shortened trips due to early departures will be possible. Consequently, we suggest that families consider normal trip insurance for such situations when preparing for EuroTour 2008.

Each student will be required to buy an emergency travel card from the campus International Studies office which can be used for emergency travel back to the USA.

Normal health insurance for each student will be required before the trip departs.

Sign-up

Sign-up in B-204 of Tribble Hall on November 8th at 5:15pm if you want to take one of the three courses for credit. To audit a course (everyone must at least audit one course) sign-up in B-204 of Tribble Hall at 5:15 pm on November 29th. If the Tour does not fill up after these sign/up dates, it will remain open until all places are taken. Basically, the tour is equally open to any Wake Forest undergraduate. Students from other universities can only go, if Wake Forest students fail to fill up the trip. We have room for up to 37 students.

We have room for ten students in each of the courses.

A $100 deposit is required for all sign-ups and is fully refundable until we have to spend it to pay for various trip components (normally after February 15th) A check written to Wake Forest University is required for the deposit.

Based on all of our past experience, we reserve one-third of the trip places for the minority gender. So, for example, if mostly men are signing up this year, we'll limit them to 25 places and save the remaining spots for women.

We will keep a waiting list to replace those who find out in the Spring that they cannot go. There are always changes in people's lives which cause them to cancel their plans to go with us and allow us to make offers to most people on the waiting list.

We will give graduating seniors first priority on the waiting list if more people want to join the tour than we have places for.
