Course Objectives:

• To develop a thorough understanding of the organization and functioning of digital computers. Topics include computer architecture, systems, theory, logic, and programming.
• To achieve a thorough understanding of the organization and use of networks, the Internet and the World Wide Web.
• To better understand digital media and networking as methods for information exchange.
• To understand and appreciate the ethical, moral, societal and legal issues surrounding computers and computer networks.
• To gain a historical perspective on modern digital technologies.
• To develop an awareness of the many facets of the discipline we call “computer science”.

Lectures:

• The course calendar, found at the course Web site, details topics and supporting readings from the text for each lecture.  
• Links to lecture notes will be added to the course calendar after each lecture is presented.

Laboratory:

• The laboratory course (CSC 101L) is a co-requisite to the lecture course (CSC 101) and is separately administered.
• The lab schedule, available from the course Web site, includes links to each lab’s handout and indicates any necessary preparation or reading that you should do before the lab.
• Some labs will have a pre-lab reading, which may include pre-lab activities which must be completed before coming to lab. It is your responsibility to read any pre-lab readings and follow any instructions that may be included.
• Print out and read the lab handout for each lab before coming to lab. Bring the printed handout with you to lab—you will turn it in as part of your lab work. If you do not bring a printed copy of the lab handout to lab you will not be able to complete the lab. There is no printer available in the lab room.
• Bring your laptop (and power adapter) to each lab.

Grading:

• Attendance is required. Unexcused absences may reduce your course grade.
• Your performance on the laboratory course will be included in your overall course grade for CSC 101. (You will not receive a separate letter grade for CSC 101L.)
• A short research paper on a topic related to the course will be required. See the separate handout for research paper guidelines and suggested topics.
• Five in-class exams will be given as shown on the course calendar. Your lowest exam grade will count half as much as each of the other exams.
• A cumulative final exam will be given during the final exam period scheduled for your lecture section. (The final is in addition to the five in-class exams.)
• The various contributions to your overall course grade will be weighted as follows:

Lab attendance and performance:	20%
Research paper:	10%
In-class exams:	50%
Cumulative final exam:	20%

• The overall course grade will be based on the percentage of total weighted points earned as shown below (no curves):

92 % or above:	A	72 thru 77.9:	C
90 thru 91.9:	A –	70 thru 71.9:	C –
88 thru 89.9:	B +	68 thru 69.9:	D +
82 thru 87.9:	B	62 thru 67.9:	D
80 thru 81.9:	B –	60 thru 61.9:	D –

Attendance:

• Lecture and lab attendance is mandatory. Unexcused absences may reduce your course grade. Sickness is excusable but if possible please email the instructor before the class you will miss.
• Please provide a schedule as soon as possible if you have activities that will require you to miss any class meetings or assignment due dates.
• Make-up exams may be arranged in the case of unavoidable circumstances such as illness, official university events or activities, etc. Having too much work to do is not a valid reason for delaying an exam or other assignment due date. No make-up exams will be administered unless pre-arranged with the instructor (although exceptions may be considered due to illness or another unexpected occurrence, with acceptable documentation).

Other Course Policies:

• Announcements and other course communications will frequently be made via email. It is your responsibility to check your WFU email account regularly.
• Electronic devices (laptops, cell phones, PDAs, calculators, recording devices, etc.) are not to be used during lectures or exams without prior permission of the instructor. Please do not use your laptop during class.

• This course is offered for a letter grade. The pass/fail option will not be considered unless all wait-listed students have been accommodated.
