Individual Instruction

MUS 161 and MUS 261

These courses are available to anyone who desires to develop his/her talent for the flute. MUS 161 is generally better for the intermediate, non-major or non-minor. Prospective majors or minors are encouraged to take MUS 261. I will schedule lesson times after receiving a copy of your schedule from the Music Department Registration which takes place in M309 before each semester begins.

ATTENDANCE POLICY

If you are sick, please call me at x6005 to let me know that you will be absent. I will make up the lesson when you are well. If you are going to miss the lesson for another reason, please let me know as soon as you can. I will make up the lesson if it is convenient for me and the reason for missing is valid.

LESSON AND PRACTICE DIARY

Please bring a spiral notebook to each lesson. I will use it to write your assignments, suggestions for practice, important information that you need to be aware of, etc.

MASTER CLASSES AND PERFORMANCE ATTENDANCE

I will be scheduling some master classes. There are several reasons that I consider the master class setting to be valuable. Preparation for performances in front of others always results in a higher level of mastery than if the student were only to play for me. And interaction between students yields increased interest in the literature performed by peers and the opportunity to learn by example and by hearing teacher comments to others. There will be several performances of interest to flutists each semester. You are required to attend one of them. Turn in a copy of the program to me soon after you have attended the event.

In the Fall semesters, every flute student will be required to participate in the Flute Fest Concert. This is possible no matter what your level of playing. Some students play solos, others play in small ensembles and some only play in the "mass flute choir" production.
