A brief history:
Born in Winston-Salem, NC at the end of the 1950s he was
the second of three sons. His father's military career took
Paul to Virginia, Texas, Germany and back again. He developed
an interest in photography (pun intended) at eleven years old
and it has been a continuing positive influence on his life.
An Eagle Scout at fourteen, Paul is a natural outdoorsman. Completing
High school in 1977 he went straight to work. After a year and
a day with the FBI's Identification
Division as a Fingerprint examiner Paul went to Western Carolina
University and by 1982 received a BA in Political Science, hoping
to go into the CIA. Knees tragically destroyed while playing
a pick-up football game some years earlier dashed these dreams.
So he moved to North Carolina's Outer Banks and became a "Beach
Bum". During these years he worked as a kite salesman/instructor,
7-11 clerk, house painter (interior), camera store clerk/darkroom
tech., actor, sailing instructor, and waiter. Paul returned
to Winston when his best friend offered him a "real job"
as an industrial hydraulic/pneumatic salesman. When the company
went under Paul became an audio/Visual technician. It was during
this time he first got his hands on a Macintosh computer loaded
with Photoshop. Manipulating images with the new version 2.5
was an enlightening experience. The next job was office manager
for a small CAD company and Paul found himself using both of
the major personal computing platforms. When that company went
under Paul went to Florida and became a freelance sailing yacht
crewman. For two years he sailed up and down the east coast of
the US, the Bahamas and the west coast of Florida. Paul became
an avid scuba diver and did part time work in various dive shops
when not crewing on sailboats. He returned to Winston when offered
a job as a photographer in a digital studio that was part of
a pre-press company. Just prior to actually starting his new
job he met the woman of his dreams. She happened to work for
the afore mentioned pre-press company so they got to work near
each other for four years. They got married during that time,
shortly before the company when under (is there a pattern developing
here?) Paul took this opportunity to learn the ins and outs
of the new "internet" and became a HTML programmer/website
designer. A daughter arrived and Paul took another job in the
pre-press industry to support his growing family. When a position
at the Art Department of WFU opened Paul applied and was hired.
He has been on staff since 2000. A son has been added and now
the family is complete. The Marley's live in Tobaccovile, NC
at the dead end of a dirt road.
