Questions 1 - 5. Problems 2, 5, 7, 9, 15.

Q6.1

The points to the right of the peak are moving up rapidly. The points to the left of the peak are moving down. Both of these cause motion blur of the image.

The peak itself is momentarily stationary.

Q6.2

Light and radio waves do not need a medium. Sound does. So do water waves.

Q6.3

In a longitudinal wave, the particles move in the same direction as the wave moves. In a transverse waves, the particles move perpendicular to the motion of the wave.

Sound waves are longitudinal. Light waves and waves on a string are transverse.

Water waves are mostly transverse, with a little longitudinal motion mixed in.

Q6.4

The stadium wave is transverse. In contrast with the waves in this chapter, people can be lazy and not participate. Except for electromagnetic waves, waves in this chapter follow naturally from the forces between different parts of the medium. Electromagnetic waves are natural outcomes of fields, which we will discuss more next chapter.

Q6.5
