Chapter 8: Questions 18, 25, 30, 33, 35. Problems 8, 10. Challenge 6.

Q8.18

A changing magnetic field creates an electric field, and a changing electric field creates a magnetic field. Thus, each creates the next ad infinitum.

Q8.25

Infrared.

Q8.30

Blackbody radiation is the spectrum of electromagnetic waves emitted by any perfectly absorbing object warmer than zero Kelvin. The spectrum of objects that are not perfectly absorbing follow the same general shape, but with dips in the curve.

The peak wavelength decreases as the object gets warmer.

Q8.33

Q8.35

Certain gases, such as carbon dioxide and methane, are transparent to visible light but absorb infrared. Thus they pass sunlight to the earth, but trap blackbody radiation from the earth back into space. This causes the earth to warm. This is the greenhouse effect.
