Is 24 bits enough?

Some on rec.photo.digital have questioned whether the 24 bit palette used by most graphics cards and applications is sufficient for display. To address that question, consider the following rectangles. Each has the same color for the left half: R=240, G= 160, B=80. Listed in the table is the RGB value for the right half of the rectangle. Can you discern the difference?

Right Half
  Red Green Blue
237 158 79
239 159 79
239 160

80

The difference in the first figure is discernable to most people. How about the other two?

A very different question is whether it is useful to have more bits in graphics applications, cameras, and scanners. Image processing often brings out shadow detail, for example, that would greatly benefit from greater bit depth.
