Approval Process for Graduate Student Research


There are four steps in the research approval process.
Students must complete all four before you begin collecting data.


1.  Advisor Work with advisor to select a topic and design a research plan.  Both you and your advisor must be certified by CITI.
2.  Wake Forest Institutional Review Board 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 

 

Proposal must be submitted to the university eIRB for approval.  This online process will require the following:

  • Biosketch
  • Protocol 
    • Study Title
    • Background and Purpose
    • Key Personnel
    • Research Site
    • Participants
    • Methodology
    • Protection of Participants
    • Retention of Research Records
  • Copies of Instruments to be used  
  • Informed Consent Letter for Adult Participants or Parents of Minors
  • Informed Assent Letter for Minors

Proposal must be submitted to the Winston-Salem/ Forsyth County Schools for any research involving students or teachers in the system.  This proposal should be submitted electronically to Dr. McCoy at the same time the proposal is submitted to the IRB.

This proposal should include 

  • Cover Sheet 
    • Title
    • Principal Researcher (with address)
    • Advisor (with address)
    • Dates
    • Summary (One paragraph)
  • Proposal 
    • Purpose
    • Subjects
    • Administrative Time and Burdens
    • Survey Instruments and Other Documents
    • Confidentiality
    • Funding
    • Timelines
    • Researcher's Background Information
    • Consent Forms
    • Disclosure of Information
  • Copies of Instruments to be used (Surveys, Tests, Interview Questions, or Observation Forms)
  • Researcher's Resumé
  • Informed Consent Letter for Adult Participants or Parents of Minors (under 18)
  • Informed Assent Letter for Minors

NOTE:  If you are not a Graduate Student in the Department of Education, you should submit this proposal directly to:   Dr. Marty Ward, Program Evaluation Manager, Accountability Services, Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools, P.O. Box 2513, Winston-Salem, NC  27102
4.  Program Director  Submit copies of approval letters from IRB and WS/FC Schools to Dr. McCoy. 

THEN contact principal and begin collecting data.
