Wake Forest World Health Tour

The World Health Tour is a study abroad experience that allows Wake Forest students the chance to travel and learn about health behaviors in the United States and other cultures. This summer course is offered by Dr. Gary Miller in the Health and Exercise Science Department at Wake Forest University. Students learn how behaviors such as diet and physical activity play a role in chronic disease prevention. While on the trip, students experience the diet and physical activity of the cultures. They monitor their own physical activity and dietary patterns and compare them to their typical habits back home. A term paper is written to describe these assessments.

This trip is unique in that time is spent in small, rural cities and villages, which are less likely to be influenced by “Americanization”. This allows students a better sense of the diverse areas of the world. The group partake in many physical pursuits, such as bike tours, day walks, kayaking, and hut-to-hut hiking. We also dine together frequently to try new foods and discuss the eating habits of a particular area. One day we may be playing in the blue water at a beach on the Mediterranean coast and the next we will be trekking over a snow-covered pass to reach our next hut. The group size is kept small (10-12 students plus faculty and family) to enhance the personal relationships. Highlights include meeting new people, experiencing the beauty of our earth, enjoying good food, and participating in an active lifestyle.
