First Meeting: Tuesday, January 19th from 11:00-11:50 in Calloway 213.

The primary goal of this class is to help you to improve your problem-solving skills and to improve your ability to write proofs. We also hope to introduce you to some interesting and beautiful ideas in mathematics. The class is open to all students who enjoy mathematics and who are willing to participate in the discussions. There are no other prerequisites. This seminar can be particularly valuable to students who are just beginning a major in mathematics, or who are simply considering a major in mathematics, and who want to practice the skills that will be so important in the upper division courses. The atmosphere of this seminar is intended to be friendly, collaborative, and lively.

This semester we will find many interesting problems and ideas in the book A Mathematical Mosaic, by Ravi Vakil.

The grading is based upon participation and effort. If you come to every class, if you attempt every problem that we assign, if you contribute to the class discussion, and if you ask for help when you need it, then you will get an A. We do not keep track of how many complete solutions you turn in.
